Interview about Comedy Sketches with Marshall University

In the middle of 2023, I embarked on an ambitious project — to write, direct, edit and release 30 football related comedy sketches in 30 days. It was during this period when I created a character who is obsessed with the Marshall University Soccer Team.

I cast the actor Thomas Sansone in the role, which is undoubtedly a large reason why so many people have connected with the character. Tom’s hilarious, heartfelt performances have made the character instantly loveable and relatable.

The first few sketches quickly spread around the campus of Marshall University, with many students, faculty, and local sports fans reaching out to me in those first few weeks to say that they loved the sketches.

Many were slightly bemused. Why is this director in England focusing on a University soccer team in West Virginia?

The secret soon became apparent — my girlfriend (now wife) is from West Virginia, and is Marshall University alumni. My trips to Huntington and surrounding areas were a great inspiration — meeting the friendly locals, getting to know the community, and seeing the passion for sports.

Over the following year, I made many more comedy sketches, often returning to the Marshall character.

When we returned to WV for our wedding in August 2023, we were invited, along with my family and friends, to have a tour of the University, to get to know Marshall even better.

We were also invited to a soccer match and got to meet the players, coach, and many people involved with the team. It was a great trip, where we made many new friends!

And then, leading up to our most recent trip, I was asked if I would be happy to be interviewed by the university, to share more about the creation of the videos.

Below is the new interview, which I feel very proud of.

A year ago, the sketches didn’t exist. Then, from just a silly idea in my head — to seeing the character come to life through the talent of Thomas Sansone (and the rest of the cast) — it has led to many friendships and connections within the Marshall University community.

Here’s the interview.

Big thanks to Austin O’Connor, Clark Davis and the rest of the team at Marshall U!
